Dedicated to the memory of Barbara Anne Brabon

This site is a tribute to our sister Barbara Anne Brabon, who was born in London on August 22, 1943. She is much loved and will always be remembered.

Barbara died 30th November 2019, with her carer the beautiful Louise Carr,  at her bed side.

We are so proud to have known this inspirational lady. Many of us were awe-inspired by her determination, courage and resilience. She never missed a trick and had a great sense of humour.

She was born with cerebral palsy in 1943, but overcame every obstacle to live life to the full.  She learned to walk at the age of three, went to school, and then out to work. She got married, traveled widely, and qualified as a lay-reader. Later she helped found the Tabor Centre, a day-centre in Braintree for people with disabilities, and contributed to many other charities that helped the lives of countless others.

She wrote a book about her life called ‘Understanding not Pity’, which is a remarkable tale told with honesty, simplicity and humour, though not without its darker moments. Barbara challenged us to get over 'feeling sorry' for people with disabilities, to meet them on equal terms and to support their integration into the day-to-day life of the wider community.

She had an incredible care team during the last few years of her life, and some very special friends, and we are humbled and grateful for the love they showered on Barbs.

Dearest Barbara, we are feeling so much gratitude for the love, lessons, and laughter you shared with us over the years. We love you. God speed!
